My one-year Doha-versary is actually tomorrow, so this seems a good a time as any to start a new blog. I don’t exactly know where that year went (I believe perhaps ocelots stole it), but I know one thing: a lot has changed. I’m not quite sure when all of that happened either; a year ago I was a granola-crunching ex-vegetarian journalist, more comfortable writing about goats and small-town council meetings than spas, fine cuisine, and having the word ‘editor’ appear anywhere on my business cards.
Put it this way: a year ago I didn’t own a bra.
Now, I’m at the helm of Qatar Happening, making the magazine happen, mainly I think by the immense ingestion of caffeine and a total willingness to never leave my office.
It’s a different world entirely, Doha, magazines, management: it’s crazy summer camp and no one goes home till somebody cries. Or we go to print, whichever happens first.
I get to do a lot, and try a lot with my job, and throughout it all, I’m trying to hold onto that girl with the Chuck Taylor’s who stood in the rain for two hours interviewing people and didn’t care. I think that’s something a lot of people, upon arrival in Qatar, experience: the moment of complete WTF-ery, when you ponder ‘Is this my life? When did this become my life? And do I care?’
A lot goes on in our bat-cave of an office, so join me as I navigate my way through putting out this magazine each month, the ups, the downs, the midnight hallway dance-fests, the crazy fashion shoots, and the general shenanigans that go into bringing us to you each and every month.
